These prestigious Fellowships are awarded to selected, exceptional graduates with the potential to make an outstanding contribution to Industry for a programme of doctoral level research. They are open to company employed candidates or nominated Doctoral Centre / CASE candidates.

Around 10-15 awards are made each year, one of which is designated the ERA Foundation Fellow for the electro-technology sector.

Eligibility

  • The applicant must have a good first degree in engineering, science, medicine or design. It is unlikely that those already having substantial post-graduate qualifications will be accepted.
  • Applicants must have identified a research and/or development topic potentially leading to a patent, product or process in conjunction with a higher academic award, usually a PhD or EngD.

Industry Employed Applicants

  • Applicants must be employed by, or have an offer of employment from a company in the UK.
  • Applicants must demonstrate a link between their employing company and appropriate staff at a UK University.

CDT/CASE Applicants

  • Applicants must be in the first or second year of a UK University based doctoral programme strongly coupled to industry, such as through a Centre for Doctoral Training, CASE programme or similar entity.
  • Candidates must demonstrate a clear tangible benefit to the company sponsoring their project as well as to the individual.
  • Please note that due to a change in the Terms and Conditions for 2024, no more than two candidates may apply from one CDT.

Benefits

  • 50% of the Fellow’s salary, including the employer’s share of national insurance and superannuation paid, up to a limit of £25,000 p.a.
  • University fees paid up to normal levels for UK students.
  • Travel allowance of £3,500 p.a.
  • Honorarium of £10,000 paid to the University research department on completion of first year of Fellowship to support the department’s research programme.
