Alex Murdock, co-founder of Thermulon, is working on novel chemistry for the production of low-cost aerogel materials

There are currently no insulation solutions on the market that are simultaneously high-performance, fire-safe and low-cost. Recent prioritization of building safety and energy efficiency has made the commercialization of such products increasingly pressing. At Thermulon, the team of RAE & RSC backed chemists and engineers are re-designing the chemistry for the production of silica aerogels, increasing the efficiency of their manufacturing and reducing their cost. As they are the most insulating material in existence, bringing down the cost of aerogels is the most promising pathway to delivering super-high-efficiency buildings in the UK, both through retrofit and new build.
